Magnesium-ion and zinc-ion could be two key alternatives to replace the more expensive lithium-ion batteries that’s been powering portable gadgets for nearly three decades, Nikkei reported on Sunday.
While the European Magnesium Interactive Battery Community, dubbed E-Magic, looks to pack 1,000 watts of energy density – twice lithium-ion’s capacity – into a litre’s worth of a magnesium-ion battery, a new type of zinc-ion battery that reduces fire hazards is in the works, the report said.
Limited supply of lithium and cobalt – the key constituents of a Li-ion battery – is also behind the global hunt for a replacement, which may become ready by 2030.
