Skoda Auto plans to make electric cars in India, The Economic Times quoted global chairman Thomas Schaefer as saying on Friday.
The automaker will, however, make its EV debut in the country via imports initially, with the launch of its green SUV Enyaq, Schaefer said.
Skoda’s EV plans comes at a time when local carmakers – Tata Motors, Mahindra and Mahindra, and Korea’s Hyundai-Kia – accelerate their shift to green vehicles in India.
Skoda Auto has been given the charge of leading the $1.07 billion (Rs 8,000-crore) worth of Indian investments by European auto major Volkswagen between 2019 and 2021.
