Markus Duesmann, CEO of Audi, told German media outlet Wirtschaftswoche on Thursday that the firm plans to phase-out combustion engine vehicles and will only bring EVs to market from 2026. Audi will gradually shut down the production of conventional vehicles and will only ship electric-powered vehicles from 2035. The firm sold 385,084 vehicles in the first quarter of this year, with 6.3% of those sales being EVs, representing a growth of 66% compared to the same period in 2021, according to Chinese media outlet Caijing. Major Chinese automaker BYD announced in March that it had ceased production of combustion engine cars and that it would only ship plug-in hybrid and electric cars. [Reuters]
