Beijing unveils new EV subsidy program to boost sales after pandemic

Beijing’s municipal government has launched a new subsidy program for electric vehicle purchases in an aim to rekindle slowing demand, as the world’s largest auto market recovers in the aftermath of a resurgence of the Covid-19 pandemic this year. Car buyers could receive up to RMB 10,000 ($1,495) for trading in old vehicles for new, electric ones, according to a document published on June 26 by the city’s Municipal Commerce Bureau, along with other six government agencies. China’s auto sales fell by 12.2% year-on-year in the first five months of 2022, with carmakers still reeling from the effects of the recent Covid-19 pandemic, official figures showed.
