China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) announced on Wednesday that it will stop applying asterisks to names of cities that have recently seen Covid-19 outbreaks on its travel tracker, in a sign of a further easing of the country’s Covid-19 controls. On Tuesday, China announced that it will cut the quarantine time required for overseas travelers in half. Previously, an asterisk would appear on people’s travel tracker if they visited cities with an outbreak, even a small one in limited areas. The asterisk would often result in people being barred or delayed when traveling across the country. The travel tracker displays people’s travel history in the past two weeks by leveraging MIIT’s collaboration with three main state telecommunication providers to track people based on their smartphone usage.
