Global PC shipments fell by 12.6% year-on-year to 72 million units in the second quarter of 2022, expanding from a decline of 6.8% year-on-year in the first quarter of this year, according to Gartner, a US-based insights firm. Shipments by Chinese vendors Acer and Lenovo experienced a quarterly fall of 18.7% and 12.5%, respectively, while US brand HP experienced the most significant quarterly fall, at 27.5%. “The decline we saw in the first quarter of 2022 has accelerated in the second quarter, driven by the ongoing geopolitical instability caused by the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, inflationary pressure on spending and a steep downturn in demand for Chromebooks,” said Mikako Kitagawa, research director at Gartner. The disruption of supply chains caused by China’s Covid-19 lockdowns also played a part in the continued decline of PC shipments. [Gartner]
