CATL to build second European EV battery plant in Hungary

Chinese battery maker CATL announced Friday that it will build a new 100 gigawatt-hours (GWh) battery pack factory for €7.3 billion ($7.6 billion) in Hungary, as it eyes growing demand among global automakers such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Construction will begin by the end of the year in the eastern Hungarian city of Debrecen. The plant will be CATL’s second standalone facility in Europe, following its Thuringia, Germany plant, which will have a capacity of 11 GWh and begin mass production later this year. Last month, EV maker Nio revealed plans to begin building battery swap stations in its first overseas plant in Pest, Hungary, from September. [CATL release]
