India to limit Chinese firms from selling low-end phones

India is set to limit Chinese phone vendors like Xiaomi and Oppo from selling low-end phones cheaper than 12,000 rupees ($150), Bloomberg reported on Monday. Sources told Bloomberg that the move is based on Indian government concerns that high-volume Chinese brands such as Realme and Transsion may weaken local brands’ competitiveness. According to Counterpoint Research, the top five best-selling models in India in April were from Redmi and Realme, sub-brands of Xiaomi and Oppo. Counterpoint’s data also says that in the first quarter of 2022, Chinese phone vendors including Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo made up 63% of India’s smartphone market. [Bloomberg]
