Chinese e-commerce giant JD kicked off its RMB 10 billion ($1.4 billion) subsidy campaign at midnight on March 6, intensifying a price war with rival Pinduoduo. The discounts, which were rolled out 20 hours ahead of schedule, apply to all categories sold by JD’s self-operated stores and third-party merchants, including smartphones, household appliances, and cosmetics, product categories which are also covered by Shanghai-based Pinduoduo’s subsidy program, launched in 2019. For example, the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer (HD08) is now being subsidized on JD by RMB 331, meaning consumers are able to buy it at a final price of RMB 2,259, slightly cheaper than Pinduoduo’s RMB 2,484. JD said on its official WeChat account that the discount spree is a long-term program. [TechNode reporting]
