Apple supplier Foxconn is set to begin iPhone production in the southern Indian state of Karnataka by April 2024, according to an announcement by the Indian government on Thursday, as the company continues to diversify its supply lines beyond China. The land for the factory will be handed over to Foxconn in July. Once the plant is constructed, Foxconn plans to manufacture 20 million iPhones annually. The project, valued at $1.6 billion, has received support from the Karnataka government, with Industry Minister MB Patil stating that it will generate approximately 50,000 jobs for local citizens. Apple has expressed a goal of expanding its manufacturing presence in India and increasing the country’s contribution to its global manufacturing to 25%, Indian Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal said in January. At present, India accounts for between 5-7% of Apple’s manufacturing output. [IThome, in Chinese]
