ByteDance pauses global launch of Seedance 2.0 after Hollywood copyright disputes

TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance has paused the global launch of its latest video-generation model, Seedance 2.0, after a series of copyright disputes with major Hollywood studios and streaming platforms, according to sources familiar with the matter. Last month, after several US studios — including The Walt Disney Company — issued legal threats, ByteDance said it would take steps to prevent its AI video generator Seedance 2.0 from being used to infringe intellectual property without authorization.

Disney sent a cease-and-desist letter to ByteDance last month, accusing the company of using Disney characters without permission to train and power the Seedance 2.0 model. Earlier, videos generated by the model had gone viral on Chinese social media, including a clip showing Tom Cruise fighting Brad Pitt. [IThome, in Chinese]
