US video game company Unity Software has agreed to pay $1.63 billion for the New Zealand visual-effects studio co-founded by director Peter Jackson, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The award-winning studio, Weta Digital, helped create such blockbusters as the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy and Game of Thrones television series. It also helped make effects for movies such as Avatar and Avengers: Endgame.
As part of the acquisition, Unity – whose gaming engine was the platform for Pokémon Go – said it would expand its workforce beyond its present 275 engineers.
