Sheep-based elimination game on WeChat goes viral on Chinese social media

Yang Le Ge Yang, an elimination game on WeChat’s mini program platform, has gone viral on Chinese social media in recent days, with a related hashtag topping the trending charts on the microblogging platform Weibo. Loosely translated as “Sheep a Sheep”, the game’s WeChat index, an indicator of a topic’s popularity on the super app, hit 4 million on Wednesday, growing 60 times from the previous day. The game features comic-like art design and earworm background music and its brief introduction boasts that less than 0.1% of players can complete all the levels. The startup behind the title, Beijing Jianyou Technology, was founded in 2021 with RMB 1.2 million ($170,000) in registered assets, according to Qichacha. WeChat’s built-in gaming platform has a history of producing viral hits. Last year, another elimination title called Synthetic Watermelon also made it into the top three on Weibo’s hashtag popularity chart. [Yicai, in Chinese]
