Honor saw sales grow in mainland China in August despite market downturn

Despite all of the top five brands in the mainland China smartphone market saw a year-on-year sales decrease in August, Honor saw a 4.3% monthly growth compared with July, selling 3.6 million units to top the sales chart for the month. Overall smartphone sales in mainland China saw a 26% yearly and 7.4% monthly fall to 20.4 million units in August 2022, the seventh month in a row that the market has seen a yearly decrease. This was the worst August for smartphone sales in China since 2015, according to CINNO Research, a Chinese consultancy. Oppo and Vivo ranked behind Honor with 3.5 million and 3.2 million units sold, respectively. Apple ranked fourth with sales figures that saw little change year-on-year, though CINNO Research said it expected the tech giant’s new iPhone range to help boost sales across the sector in the fourth quarter. Xiaomi completed the top five for August but experienced the largest fall among the leading pack, with sales shrinking 40.3% year-on-year and 21.4% month-on-month to 2.5 million units.
