Shenzhen to support local esports industry with $1.38 million

Southern Chinese city Shenzhen announced draft measures to grow the local esports industry on Sept. 23. According to the draft, which is now open to public feedback for one month, the Shenzhen government will offer financial support for esports projects worth up to RMB 10 million ($1.38 million) each. The measures aim to build a local esports industrial chain, set up esports facilities, and encourage content production. The local government has also stressed that it wants more international events to be held in the city. According to a 2021 report by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, two Chinese cities, Shanghai and Beijing, rank the top five most developed esports industries globally, while Hangzhou and Chengdu rank ninth and tenth.
