US broadens bans on exporting high-performance chips to China: report

Earlier this month, the US barred the shipment of high-performance GPU chips to China. The US plans to broaden the ban next month, with devices (like servers) built with such chips and tools making those chips no longer eligible for export to China, Reuters reported on Monday. The expanded ban will affect data centers using Nvidia’s A100 chip from Dell, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and Super Micro Computer. The Biden administration has also barred American companies from exporting chipmaking equipment to Chinese factories that produce advanced chips with processes smaller than 14nm unless the sellers obtain Commerce Department licenses. The US has taken a series of steps to curb China’s semiconductor industry this year, including limiting the export of chips and equipment needed for semiconductor production. [Reuters]
