Meituan Select, the group buying unit of Meituan, updated on Tuesday its brand positioning to Mingrida Supermarket, a name that carries the meaning of next-day deliveries. Mingrida will also look to compete by offering low prices as it tries to expand its stock-keeping unit (SKU) to 3,000, after topping more than 1,500 SKUs in the first half of this year, according to a report by Chinese media outlet LatePost. Rival Pinduoduo’s grocery delivery arm Duoduo Maicai has fewer than 1,000 SKUs. Meituan Select shut down its group buying business in several cities in April of this year and began testing next-day delivery in Beijing. This move was followed by a merging of its e-commerce business units and Meituan Select in August, which paved the way for this latest transformation. [LatePost, in Chinese]
