Apple warns iPhone production hit by Covid outbreak in Zhengzhou

Covid restrictions have hit a major assembly facility in Zhengzhou for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, according to a Nov. 6 announcement from Apple. The facility is “currently operating at significantly reduced capacity,” the announcement noted, likely referencing to Foxconn. Apple projects an ongoing strong demand for iPhone Pro models and expects a slower shipment of the two Pro models, leading to longer delivery times for consumers. Apple said they are “working closely with our supplier to return to normal production levels while ensuring the health and safety of every worker.” A person with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Oct. 31 that tightening pandemic-prevention policies in China could cause a 30% drop in iPhone production in November. The local government has formed units to support workers in the Foxconn facility and achieved periodic progress in Covid control last week. Zhengzhou recorded 183 new Covid-19 confirmed cases on Nov. 5, according to the local government’s announcement. [Apple, press release]
