TikTok owner ByteDance has launched a free audio app aiming at the lower-tier market, Chinese media outlet Tech Planet reported on Tuesday. The new app is different from the company’s subscription-based music-streaming app named Soda Music, which was launched this April to compete with the market-leading platforms by Tencent and NetEase. According to the report, the newly launched app includes a feature allowing users to earn money through listening to music, seemingly as a way to attract users. The Beijing-based company upgraded music to a priority business in mid-2021, equal in importance to its gaming and education sectors. ByteDance also introduced the music-streaming app Resso in selected overseas markets in 2019. [Tech Planet, in Chinese]
