TSMC sends engineers to US plant as Arizona officials reportedly welcome second fab

Top chip contractor TSMC sent 300 engineers and their families to the company’s $12 billion plant in Arizona last week as it prepares to become operational, according to Taiwanese media outlet Business Weekly. Morris Chang, the founder of TSMC, stated at last week’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit that US vice president Kamala Harris welcomed TSMC’s presence in the US and would offer assistance as the company seeks to build a second plant in Arizona. Chang said that the cost of building new fabs in the US could be 50% higher than in Taiwan, but that this was not a barrier. He explained, “this is very important for the US and very much needed.” TSMC will hold a ceremony early next month to officially move equipment to the new fab in Arizona, with the US Secretary of Commerce in attendance.
