US Senator Marco Rubio proposed legislation on Tuesday that would ban TikTok, the wildly popular Chinese-owned video platform, from operating in the country if passed. In recent months, an increasing number of US officials have cast doubt over whether the ByteDance-backed app can appropriately secure US users’ data and Senator Rubio’s bill currently enjoys bipartisan support. On Monday, Alabama and Utah joined other states in barring the use of TikTok on government devices. Reuters cited a spokesperson for TikTok as saying the company is “disappointed that so many states are jumping on the bandwagon to enact policies based on unfounded, politically charged falsehoods about TikTok.” The spokesperson also pointed out that a company executive had previously stated during a US congressional hearing that the firm does not share information with the Chinese government.
