Management at ByteDance’s Lark (known as Feishu in China) revealed at internal meetings that it may focus more on overseas markets due to profitability challenges in the Chinese market, Jiemian reported on Monday, citing unnamed sources. Lark has not responded to Jiemian’s report. The work messaging and collaboration tool plans to target Japan, Southeast Asia, and Europe. Lark faces fierce competition at home from Alibaba’s DingTalk and Tencent WeChat’s enterprise version WeCom. Despite its goal of 10 million daily active users in 2021, the app had only 5 million users by the end of the year, internal sources told the report. Lark faced heavy staff cuts in ByteDance’s recent layoff reported late last December. [Jiemian, in Chinese]
