Amazon announced on Wednesday that it will shut down its local Kindle bookstore in China at the end of June. Users will be unable to purchase new e-books after June, but they can download purchased e-books to their devices until June 30, 2024, a statement posted on Kindle’s official WeChat account explained. Amazon will refund customers’ unused membership fees for Kindle Unlimited, and keep operating Kindle customer service in China until June 2024. Online translations, as well as the x-ray and quick-read features, will remain available on Kindle devices. Amazon said last year that Kindle’s planned exit from the China market was due to a shift in strategic focus. [Amazon Kindle WeChat, in Chinese]
