China’s annual 315 Gala of Consumer Rights Day revealed on Tuesday two consumption traps related to personal information leaks. They are incomplete phone formatting in used smartphones and the danger of using pirated mobile apps. According to the gala, quick format and factory reset don’t completely erase data on phones. Consumers need to clear all storage sections when restoring the factory settings of their mobile phones or computers. Additionally, many consumers download pirated or modified versions of apps to go around paywalls. Some of those apps can monitor users’ information and behavior without consent. These pirated apps come with irrelevant third-party plug-ins, SDK (Software Development Kit), that can secretly capture all kinds of personal information to push a series of advertisements for illegal online traffic monetization.
