Chinese battery maker CATL gets state incentives for Michigan plants

Michigan has passed a combined incentive package worth as much as $585 million to three local battery making projects, of which $210 million will be allocated to finance the establishment of a $3.5 billion battery plant by Ford and its manufacturing partner CATL. Both Ford and CATL have faced regulatory pressure, as US senator Joe Manchin publicly blasted the proposed battery manufacturing project on March 10 and Chinese government leaders asked for extra scrutiny to prevent CATL’s technology being transferred to the US, Bloomberg reported on Feb. 16.
