TikTok will automatically limit screen time for users under 18 to one hour per day, the ByteDance-owned short video platform announced on Wednesday. A statement from the company added that teenagers could choose to opt out of the default, but they will still receive a notification prompting them to set a time limit if they spend more than 100 minutes a day on TikTok. According to data from Pew Research Center, 67% of surveyed teens use TikTok and 16% of them say they use it “almost constantly”. The change comes as TikTok faces a backlash over what critics say is its inadequate protection of young users, and battles investigations by regulators in multiple countries over national security issues.
