Chinese regulator to introduce mandatory security reviews for ChatGPT-like services

China’s cyberspace regulator issued draft regulations on Tuesday for artificial intelligence-generated content, requiring companies to undergo security reviews before releasing AI products. The Cyberspace Administration of China’s proposed new rules aim to promote “the healthy development and standardized application” of generative AI technologies, according to the guidelines. The draft release follows recent demonstrations of ChatGPT-style chatbot tools by Chinese tech giants Baidu and Alibaba that showcase various capabilities for generating content. While these services are not yet available to the public, several other major firms are expected to release similar tools soon. The regulator stated that content generated by AI-powered products should align with core socialist values and that data used to train AI models must not infringe upon intellectual property rights. The proposal is open for public comment until May 10 and is expected to take effect this year. [Cyberspace Administration of China, in Chinese]
