Tesla has promoted Tom Zhu, its longtime executive in charge of its China business since late 2014, to senior vice president of automotive operations, according to a regulatory filing released on Thursday. This follows a January report by Reuters that Zhu has been directly overseeing the carmaker’s US assembly plants and sales operations in North America and Europe, with speculation that he could take over as the company’s CEO from Elon Musk. Zhu has been a vice president and head of Greater China since 2019, having led the establishment of Tesla’s Shanghai facilities and having overseen China becoming one of the car maker’s major markets. Zhu joined Tesla in April 2014 and was responsible for the local expansion of its supercharging facilities, serving as the firm’s president in China since December 2014. [Tesla filing]
