Tesla has begun production of its Model Y vehicles with battery packs sourced from BYD in its Gigafactory Berlin this week, German publication Teslamag.de reported on Thursday, citing industry insiders. BYD’s 55-kilowatt-hour battery pack, which is smaller than those of Tesla’s existing variants, will give the crossover a driving range of 440 kilometers (273 miles). In July 2021, the US automaker began exporting standard-range Model Y vehicles to Europe from China, which are equipped with battery packs of 60 kilowatt-hours (kWh) from CATL, according to regulatory filings. Liang Yubo, BYD’s executive vice president, said last June on Chinese state broadcaster CGTN that the company will begin supplying batteries to Tesla “very soon.” [Teslamag.de, in German]
