Ford Motor and China’s Geely have reportedly reached an agreement for Geely to produce electric vehicles at Ford’s Almussafes plant near Valencia, Spain, Reuters reported, citing Spanish newspaper ABC. The deal is expected to be announced during a July 23 visit to the factory by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Ford Europe President Jim Baumbick.
ABC reported that Geely could produce its EX2 electric vehicle at the plant. The arrangement would give Geely a manufacturing base inside the European Union, helping it gain direct access to the European market and potentially avoid tariffs on EVs imported from China.
For Ford, shared use of the factory could reduce fixed costs and help preserve jobs and production at Almussafes, whose future has been affected by the phaseout of several models and its reliance on the Kuga. [Reuters]
