A teenager, believed to be a prince of the Qatari royal family, has become hugely popular on Chinese social media platforms after he waved his arms and shouted in anger over the host country’s loss to Ecuador in the group stages of the 2022 World Cup. The teen stated his name as Abdulrahman Fahad al-Thani in an interview with China’s state-run broadcaster CCTV. The “prince” created an account on TikTok’s sister app Douyin on November 27, amassing 10 million followers within 20 hours. The hashtag associated with the young teenager has been read 650 million times on the Twitter-like platform Weibo, where Fahad al-Thani has since set up an official account and attracted 415,000 followers. Chinese media outlet The Paper’s fact-check channel reported on Dec. 1 that the father of the “prince” is the country’s former minister of commerce and industry, who died in a car accident in 2019, adding that he is not directly related to immediate members of the Qatar royal family.
