XPeng launches MONA L03 in Munich, taking aim at Europe’s electric SUV market

On Thursday, XPeng unveiled the MONA L03 smart SUV at its global launch event in Munich, Germany. The model will be launched in 65 countries and regions, including China, Europe, and other overseas markets, according to the Chinese automaker.

The launch marks a strategic move in XPeng’s global expansion, as the MONA L03 is the company’s first model introduced simultaneously across international markets rather than debuting in China first. By unveiling the vehicle in Munich, a key hub of Europe’s automotive industry, XPeng signals its ambition to compete directly with established global automakers.

In China, the MONA L03 starts at RMB 123,800 ($18,280) and is available in both battery-electric (BEV) and extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) variants. In Europe, pricing begins at €35,600 ($40,720), while the EREV version starts at €38,600 ($44,150), positioning the model to compete in the region’s mainstream electric SUV segment.

The MONA L03 places a strong emphasis on efficiency and driving range. The all-electric version delivers up to 650 km of CLTC range while consuming as little as 11.5 kWh per 100 km. The extended-range model offers 325 km of pure-electric CLTC range and up to 1,380 km of combined range, with a WLTC fuel consumption of 4.96 liters per 100 km when operating in charge-sustaining mode.

AI remains at the core of XPeng’s strategy. Every MONA L03 is powered by XPeng’s in-house Turing AI chip, with the Max version delivering 750 TOPS of computing power and the Ultra SE variant reaching 1,500 TOPS.

Built on XPeng’s second-generation Vision-Language-Action (VLA) model, the vehicle uses a single autonomous driving foundation model that can adapt to both Chinese and European road conditions. Beginning in 2027, XPeng plans to gradually roll out localized Navigation Guided Pilot (NGP) driver-assistance features to global markets.

The international version runs XOS 6, XPeng’s latest in-car operating system, which supports mixed-language voice recognition in English, German, French, and other languages while understanding natural conversational and emotion-aware commands.

Premium cabin features include a 26.8-inch wide head-up display (W-HUD), a 20-speaker AI audio system, a front passenger zero-gravity seat, and 14-point massage functionality.

Designed by former Ferrari designer Juanma López, the MONA L03 features XPeng’s Vital Flow design language and has a drag coefficient of 0.228 Cd. The SUV comes standard with an all-scenario tire blowout stabilization system and driver incapacitation assistance.

The launch underscores XPeng’s broader global ambitions. The company continues to advance its In Europe, for Europe strategy by establishing an R&D center in Munich and partnering with Austrian automotive supplier Magna for localized manufacturing.

XPeng also plans to build more than 4,000 ultra-fast charging stations across Europe by 2028, expanding its overseas charging infrastructure.

For XPeng, the MONA L03 represents more than just a new vehicle, serving as a key test of its global expansion strategy. By choosing Munich for the model’s global debut and launching it simultaneously across 65 countries and regions, the company is seeking to strengthen its presence in overseas markets.

However, with intensifying competition in Europe, evolving trade policies, and pressure from established local automakers, whether XPeng can translate the model’s launch into sustained sales growth and market share gains remains to be seen.
