Smartphone sales hit 62.2 million units in mainland China in the third quarter of 2022, representing 3.7% quarterly growth but a 20.8% fall compared to the same period in 2021, according to a CINNO Research report released on Thursday. The figures meant it was the worst third quarter for the industry since 2015. Apple saw 12.4% year-on-year growth, topping the chart with 10.5 million units in smartphone sales. Local rivals Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi all saw a year-on-year sales decline of over 30% in the quarter. Honor, ranking third, had a relatively smaller 15.5% yearly decline. The smartphone market in mainland China entered a downturn in the first half of 2022 due to the impact of the pandemic and a worsening economic picture in general. The arrival of the traditional peak season failed to pull the depressed market back in the second half of the year, according to CINNO Research. [TechNode reporting]
