Released on Tuesday, Google’s new browser update Chrome 107 officially supports high-efficiency video coding (HEVC) – also named H.265 – the development of which was contributed to by employees from TikTok parent company ByteDance. The new technology means Chrome can now play 8K HDR videos in 16-bit color depth. ByteDance’s video tech unit released an article on Zhihu in July, detailing how HEVC works on Chromium, the open-source browser which Chrome is based upon, and said the feature would be available as soon as Chromium 105 was released. ByteDance has been focusing on video-related tech and establishing standards with partners to power its products in recent years. The firm is also working on producing its own video processing chips, according to a July report in China Business Journal. [Android Police, TechNode reporting]
